The James Hornsby School
Thinking School Communications Tools

Client: The James Hornsby School
Created on behalf of: Hughes & Co Design
Date: August 2015

To design a series of communication tools to promote learning how to think, reflectively, critically and creatively, and to employ these skills and techniques when planning and delivering lessons. This resulted in the creation of a communication tool entitled “The Knowledge Block” comprising of:

Three Storey Intellect
Comprising of three levels of thinking – gathering, process and applying; the “Three Storey Intellect” provides a common language for students and teachers to implement learning across the school, encouraging students to think about ‘how’ they are learning and not just ‘what’ they are learning

Thinking Maps
There were 8 different “Thinking Maps” developed to help students effectively organise different thinking processes.

Thinking Hats
There were 6 different Thinking Hats developed, each corresponding to a different way of thinking. For example, when wearing the red thinking hat, students need to focus on identifying their ‘gut feelings’ about whatever they are considering.
